HISTORIC DUNBAR
Enjoying regular annual sunshine records, Dunbar is
well known for its attractive coastal setting, bracing climate, golfing
and other recreational pursuits. It is centrally placed for touring
East Lothian and is 30 miles from Edinburgh, with good road access
via the A1 and a regular rail service to the city centre from Dunbar
main line station.
Dunbar is in an ideal spot to relax and explore the coast and inland
Scottish Borders area. It is in an area in South East Scotland
that offers much for those interested in wildlife, the sea, walking,
fishing, local history and also of course a quiet relaxing holiday.
The history of the town is varied and of some significance. It was
one of the most important Scottish fortresses in the middle ages.
Its ruined castle, which stands guard over the town's twin harbours,
once sheltered Mary Queen of Scots when she fled Edinburgh after the
murder of Rizzio. It became a Royal Burgh in 1370 and the surrounding
area is rich in history with archaeological & geological sites.
The building of the recently constructed leisure centre was delayed
by several years due to the various bronze age burials found on the
site when excavations disclosed a large Celtic fort. At Doonhill the
site of an Anglo-Saxon hall has been marked out and in the Dark Ages
the Picts laid claim to Lothian and established themselves at Dunbar.
